Debate rules for Whatcom County Sheriff:

There are a few ground rules I need to cover to ensure that the debate is fair and gives valuable insight into each of you as you ask the voters/listeners for their vote.

  • Arrival time to the KGMI studio: KGMI studio is in the Cascade Radio Group station and this link has a map to the station for anyone who has not been there; https://kgmi.com/contact/
    • The show goes live at 8:05 AM until approx.. 8:58 AM. There will be two short commercial breaks and one longer break. The shorter breaks are flexible ones that need to happen sometime within the first and second halves of the program. The longer commercial break is a hard break that occurs at approx. 8:27 AM.
    • Please arrive at the studio by 7:45 AM. Once everyone has arrived we sill flip a coin to see who asks the first question.
  • Each candidate will ask their opponent 4-questions.
    • Example: Candidate-1 will ask Candidate-2 a question that takes no longer than 15 seconds to ask. Candidate-2 will then have 3 min. to answer the question. The candidate is required to answer the question, not to spin the topic into something else.
      • Once the question has been answered, the candidate can continue to speak until their 3-min. has expired. After the 3-min has expired; Candidate-1 will have 30 seconds to rebut their opponents answer.
    • This same format will be used for each of the candidates 4-questions: a 3-min. answer with a 30 sec. rebuttal.
    • If there is time remaining, the host will ask 2-questions of the candidates; giving each of them 2-min. to answer and 30-sec. to rebut. It will be a challenge to get all ten questions asked and answered, but there will be ample time to have the candidates initial eight questions fit into this format.
  • Once a question has been asked, the candidate answering the question will not be interrupted unless they are not answering the question or staying on the question topic provided by the show host.
  • No derogatory, slanderous, or demeaning language will be tolerated. The debate is to be challenging, but respectful to both candidates.
  • Each candidate please come prepared with at least 6-questions. The opportunity will be given to ask 4-questions, but it is wise to come prepared with more in case your opponent has the same question as you.
    • Topics for the debate:
      • Public Safety
      • Recruitment and retention
      • Gangs
      • Mental Health and Drug Crisis
      • Responsibilities of a County Sheriff
      • The Rule of Law

I look forward to hosting this debate. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Also, please reply that you’ve received this email as final confirmation and to let me know that you received the debate format information.
