WWU – Politics – Elections – And the Future

The Whatcom County Council Candidates were invited to attend a forum at Western Washington University tonight. Having observed some of the candidates and their answers at the Whatcom County Sierra Club forum and the WBA Whatcom County-wide forum; it interested us to attend this forum because of the student audience that would be there, to see how or if the candidates would respond differently to this audience. A welcoming like no other. The Student Master or Ceremony (MC) began this evening’s event by informing the audience that the forum was being held on land that had been stolen from the Coast Salish People. And, next the MC  let the audience know that outside the lecture hall doors there were generational bathrooms’ available for our use. The videos do provide some additional insight into each of the candidates and their fitness to represent the constituents of each District and Whatcom County as a whole. Present were all of the candidates running for office: District 1 (South Bellingham) – Phil Morgan and Rud Browne (incumbent), District 2 …

Whatcom County Jail: Discussion with Sheriff Bill Elfo on the proposed new WC Jail tax. What does the new tax cover? The size, scope, and timeline to get this done if it passes? What is at stake if it fails? The existing Whatcom County Jail was built in 1983 and ran over the permitted “Average Daily Population,” in 1989. It’s been an issue in Whatcom County for twenty-eight years and we are no closer to fixing the problem now, than we were then. Why? Learn about the history and time-line of this issue, the need to fix-it or build a new county jail, and who-what-and why it is taking so long to do the right thing. Or, is it “If We Build It – They Will Come,” as some local, legal council would have us believe?
